LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. --- The University of Notre Dame women’s golf team completed the third and final round of its spring opener, the Central District Invitational, earlier today. The Irish climbed the leaderboard from ninth to eighth place today, surpassing Indiana. Notre Dame’s overall score for the tournament was 881 (292-295-294, +17).
“It's not the finish we were looking for,” said head coach Susan Holt. “Our team scores were some of the best this season, but relative to the field, we were well off from where we needed to be. The course gave up a ton of low scores, and we just couldn't get four solid rounds each day when many other teams did. We are better than this finish, but it comes down to executing when it counts.”
Freshman Jordan Ferreira was the top performer for the Irish today, carding a one-below-par score of 71, her best round of the tournament by four strokes. Her score in the third round also vaulted her from being tied in 47th place to finishing in a tie for 35th place.
Sophomore Talia Campbell was at the top of the Irish leaderboard over the course of the three-round tournament. She carded a 219 (70-76-73, +3), and finished in a tie for 25th place.
After two strong rounds yesterday, junior Ashley Armstrong struggled today, posting a score of 78 (+6). She was still able to finish in a tie for 31st place. Senior Kristina Nhim (224, +8) and junior Kelli Oride (227, +11) capped off the Irish squad in ties for 45th and 53rd places.
The Irish will play host to a tournament in in Mesa, Ariz., at the Longbow Golf Club Mar. 14 – 16 next month. In the meantime, they travel back to South Bend to continue practicing for their first spring in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
“There is lots of work to be done before our next trip in three weeks,” Holt adds. “Everybody has their own issues to work through and that will be the focus at practice. It's very apparent that we need to play more but that's just not going to happen with all the snow still around.”
