Williamsburg, Va. - The University of Notre Dame women's golf team picked up its second tournament championship of the 2000-01 season on Sunday as they finished first at the William and Mary Invitational with a 36-hole mark of 626 (312-314). The Irish outdistanced tournament host William and Mary by five strokes and first round co-leader, Elon College by six on the 5,821-yard, par 71 Ford's Colony Country Club course. Notre Dame won its own Notre Dame Invitational in October for its other win this season.

The Irish opened the day tied with Elon College as both schools fired opening rounds of 312. On Sunday, Notre Dame's scoring five shot a 314 total for the second best round of the day (Methodist College shot a 313) to take the tournament by five shots. William and Mary shot 315 for the day to finish with a 631 after Saturday's opening round of 316. Elon College finished third after shooting a 320 in the final round.

Rounding out the top five teams were East Tennessee State in fourth with a 637 total (318-319) and Methodist finished fifth with a 641 total after rounds of 328 and 313.

Individually, the Irish placed three golfers in the top nine. Freshman Shannon Byrne (Arlington Heights, Ill.) led the way, tying for fourth place, with a 36-hole total of 151 on rounds of 76 and 75. That put her just four shots off the pace set by tournament medalist, Ann Schnell of William and Mary, who fired a five-over par 147 (72-75) for the weekend. Schnell won the tournament by three shots over Katie Allison (Winthrop) and Esty Dwek (Princeton) who tied for second with 150. Byrne's fourth place tie and the 36-hole total of 151 were career bests for the freshman golfer.

Joining Smith in the top nine were senior Shane Smith (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and sophomore Terri Taibl (Elm Grove, Wisc.) who tied for ninth with 154 totals. Smith came into the final round tied for fourth after shooting an opening round of 74, but carded an 80 over the final 18 holes for her 154. Taibl shot rounds of 76 and 78 for her 154 total. The 36-hole, 154 totals were the best of Smith and Taibl's Notre Dame careers.

Senior Danielle Villarosa (Verona, N.J.), playing as an individual entrant finished the tournament tied for 24th after shooting a 161 with rounds of 80 and 81. Notre Dame's fourth finisher was junior Kristin McMurtrie (Calgary, Alb.) who finished tied for 44th with a 167 total. She shot an 86 in the opening round and followed it with an 81 on Sunday. Sophomore Shelby Strong (Stillwater, Minn.) tied for 71st with a 177 mark on rounds of 86 and 91 on the weekend.

The Notre Dame women's golf team returns to action on April 7-8 when they travel to Bloomington, Indiana for the Indiana Invitational.
