March 31, 2016

By Chris Masters

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame women’s golf team has a final chance to tune up its game before the postseason as the Fighting Irish tee off at 8:30 a.m. (ET) Friday in the Bryan National Collegiate on the Bryan Park Champions Course (par 72/6,386 yards) in Browns Summit, North Carolina (just outside of Greensboro).

Notre Dame, which has been ranked in the top 25 nationally by Golfstat for much of the season and as high as No. 20 earlier this month, will look to rebound from an uncharacteristic 11th-place finish and 934 (+70) score at the LSU Tiger Classic 10 days ago.

Senior captain Talia Campbell has finished in the top 20 in her last four tournaments, shooting par or better in six of 12 rounds during that span.

Here’s a look at five things you need to know as Notre Dame steps to the No. 10 tee at Bryan Park on Friday morning:

  • The Bryan Park Champions Course will play at 6,386 yards, the longest layout the Fighting Irish have seen this season. In fact, the only course Notre Dame has played this year that was longer than 6,300 yards was Michigan State’s Forest Akers West Course (6,334 yards), with the Fighting Irish winning the season-opening Mary Fossum Invitational by 14 strokes over the host Spartans on Sept. 12-13.
  • Notre Dame has finished in the top five on five occasions this season, including two victories (Mary Fossum Invitational and Nebraska’s Chip-N Club Invitational on Oct. 5-6). Both times the Fighting Irish did not wind up in the top five, they bounced back in fine fashion with a top-five finish in their next event. Most notably, after placing seventh (899/+35) at Louisville’s Cardinal Cup on Oct. 19-20, Notre Dame trimmed a staggering 33 shots off its score and took second (866/+2) at UNCW’s Landfall Tradition less than a week later on Oct. 23-25.
  • Senior captain Talia Campbell (Dallas, Texas/Ursuline Academy) has finished in the top 20 in her last four tournaments (twice cracking the top 10), shooting par or better in six of those 12 rounds.
  • Campbell and junior Jordan Ferreira (University Place, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) both competed well at last year’s Bryan National Collegiate during Notre Dame’s first-ever appearance at the tournament. Campbell tied for sixth place (222/+6), while Ferreira shared 14th place (225/+9) after spending much of the event in the top 10 and starting the final round in fifth place. As a team, the Fighting Irish tied for seventh place in last year’s 18-team tournament after shooting 909 (+45).
  • This is the first of two trips to the greater Greensboro area for Notre Dame during the next two weeks. On April 15-17, the Fighting Irish will compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championship at the Sedgefield Country Club, the home of the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship which is located on the opposite side of Greensboro, about 25 miles southwest of the Bryan Park Champions Course.
  • Wake Forest will provide live scoring of the Bryan National Collegiate through the Golfstat web site (Golfstat.com), with in-progress updates also provided through the Fighting Irish women's golf Twitter feed (@NDwomensGolf).
