Notre Dame, ind. - Notre Dame sophomore women's golfer Talia Campbell (Dallas, Texas) recently qualified for the United States Golf Association's 2013 U.S. Women's Amateur golf championship that will be held August 5-11 at the par 71, 6,488-yard Country Club of Charleston in Charleston, S.C.

Campbell qualified for the 2013 U.S. Amateur with a three-over par 74 at the Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas on July 10th. That was two strokes off the pace set by winner Lakareber Abe who fired a one-over par 72 and tied her for third with six others. She survived a one-hole playoff with five other golfers to be among the nine qualifiers to advance to the tournament in Charleston.

The 2013 U.S. Amateur has a starting field of 156 players that includes 31 exempt golfers with the remainder of the field coming from 18 sectional qualifiers around the country. The tournament will open with two rounds of stroke play on Aug. 5-6. After the 36 holes, the top 64 scorers will advance to the match-play portion of the tournament. The first round of match play is Aug. 7 with the second and third rounds on Aug. 8. The quarterfinals are on Aug. 9, the semifinals on Aug. 10 with the 36-hole championship set for Aug. 11.

The USGA had a record 1,170 entries for this year's tournament. The U.S. Women's Amateur is one of the USGA's original three championships and has been played since 1895 and is open to female amateur golfers with a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 5.4.

Campbell becomes the 21st Irish women's golfer to appear in the U.S. Women's Amateur and is making her second appearance. Prior to coming to Notre Dame, the 2013 All-BIG EAST standout qualified in 2011 and played at the Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington, R.I. There, she tied for 36th in the first two rounds of stroke play with a 36-hole total of three-over par 145 (74-71). She lost in the first round of stroke play to Danielle Kang, three and two.

The former Ursuline Academy of Dallas Prep standout had an outstanding freshman year at Notre Dame as she played in all 11 tournaments and posted the fourth-best single season stroke average (74.70) in the program's history. A unanimous all-BIG EAST selection, Campbell was co-medalist honors at the BIG EAST championship as she shot a 54-hole totals of six-under par 210 to lead the Irish to the BIG EAST team title. During the year, she posted five top-10 tournament finishes among the 11 tournaments she played.
