EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Despite shifting to a tournament several
thousand miles away, the Notre Dame women's golf team met with the same
misfortune-as the weather again led to a shortened competition, this time
at Michigan State's Mary Fossum Invitational.
Notre Dame-which last week saw the third round canceled at the Fall Preview
in Howie-In-Hills, Fla., due to the impending Hurricane Gordon-experienced
more significant cancellations this weekend, due to an 18-hour downpour
from Friday-Saturday mornings that flooded the greens at the Forest Akers
West Golf Course. Friday's practice round and Saturday's two rounds of
competition both were wiped out, with the 15 teams managing to play one
round on Sunday.
Senior captain Shane Smith and junior Kristin McMurtie led the Irish with
matching rounds of 79 on Sunday while freshmen Shannon Byrne (84), Jeanne
Murphy (84) and Rebecca Rogers (86) rounded out Notre Dame's starting five.
The Irish posted a team round of 326, just one stroke back of 13th-place
Ohio University.
Notre Dame junior Lauren Fuchs (87) and sophomore Shelby Strong (86) also
competed, as individual entrants.
Minnesota (296) posted the best round on Sunday, followed by Kent State
(299), Northwestern (301) and the host Spartans (302). Michigan's Kim
Benedict and Minnesota's Jenny Bruun turned in the top individual rounds,
at two-under 70.
