From The First Tee: Irish at Chip-N Club Invitational

Freshman Emma Albrecht has finished in the top 15 at her first two collegiate tournaments, including a tie for ninth at the season-opening Mary Fossum Invitational.

Oct. 4, 2015

LINCOLN, Neb. - The hectic harvest season is at hand in Nebraska, but rather than reaping that state’s signature corn crop, the University of Notre Dame women’s golf team aims to harvest low scores as the Fighting Irish tee off in the Cornhusker State for the first time in program history at 9 a.m. CT (10 a.m. ET) Monday in the first two rounds of the University of Nebraska’s Chip-N Club Invitational at the Country Club of Lincoln (par 72/6,105 yards) in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Here’s a look at five things you need to know before Notre Dame steps to the first tee at the Country Club of Lincoln on Monday morning:

  • The Chip-N Club Invitational is the only new stop on the Fighting Irish schedule this season, and it’s one of two additions to the Notre Dame docket from last year’s slate. Later this month on Oct. 19-20, the Fighting Irish will make their first appearance since 2007 at the University of Louisville’s Cardinal Cup.

  • The name of the Nebraska tournament is derived from the Huskers’ support program called the Chip-N Club (the letter “N” standing for Nebraska).

  • Notre Dame is the highest-rated team in the field at this year’s Chip-N Club Invitational, checking at No. 46 in the current Golfweek rankings. The next closest participant in the 12-team event is No. 81 Kansas, which finished one stroke ahead of the Fighting Irish at the Schooner Fall Classic two weeks ago in Norman, Oklahoma.

  • While this will be Notre Dame’s first appearance in the Nebraska’s Chip-N Club Invitational, the Huskers have competed in the past three editions of the annual Fighting Irish home tournament, the Clover Cup, which is held each spring in Mesa, Arizona. Nebraska, which will take part in the fifth annual Clover Cup next March, finished ninth in last spring’s event after a team-best eighth-place showing at the 2014 Clover Cup.

  • Senior captain Talia Campbell (Dallas, Texas/Ursuline Academy) is playing some of the best golf of her college career. In her last 13 rounds, dating back to last spring’s Bryan National Collegiate, Campbell has posted a 72.23 stroke average, with eight rounds at par or lower (and 11 rounds at 73 or lower). Campbell currently leads the Fighting Irish this season with a 71.80 stroke average through her first two tournaments.
