The Notre Dame women's lacrosse team opened the 2004 campaign on a winning note as the Irish edged the California Golden Bears, 12-11, in overtime on Friday afternoon.
The Irish were led offensively by seniors Abby Owen and Meredith Simon as each scored three goals in the game. Two of Owen's goals in came in overtime, including the game winner on a free-position shot with 2:04 left in the extra stanza. Lauren Fischer and Crysti Foote added two goals each and Andrea Kinnik and Meghan Murphy rounded out the Notre Dame offense with a goal each.
Leanne Zilioli led Cal-Berkeley with three goals while Elizabeth Reifsnyder, Julianne Wu and Colleen O'Mara each scored twice for the Golden Bears who fall to 1-2 on the season.
Notre Dame jumped out to an 8-3 lead at halftime as Foote, Fischer and Simon each had three goals to pace the attack.
In the second half, the Golden Bears ran six unanswered goals to take a 9-8 lead with 8:39 left in the game. A free-position goal by Owen, her first of the day, tied the score at 9-9 and Simon closed out her three-goal afternoon with a free-position goal of her own to make it 10-9 Irish with 4:21 left in the game.
Zilioli capped her three-goal day when she scored on a free-position shot with just five seconds left to tie the game at 10-10.
In overtime, Owen scored twice while Laura Cavallo scored Cal's lone goal of the extra stanza to give the Irish the 12-11 win.
Goalkeeper Carol Dixon, making her first career start, got the victory while making nine saves. California's Hilary Lynch made eight saves on the game.
Notre Dame returns to action on Sunday, February 29th when they visit the Stanford Cardinal in a 12:00 noon game in Palo Alto, Calif.
