Notre Dame, Ind. - The Notre Dame women's lacrosse team dropped its second game of the weekend on Sunday afternoon when the Irish dropped a heartbreaking 14-13, double overtime decision to 16th-ranked Stanford at Moose Krause Stadium.

Stanford got a goal from Megan Burker with 1:32 left in the game to send the contest to overtime and then got another late goal from Julie Calzonetti with just 18 seconds left in the first overtime to tie the game at 13-13 to send it to the second overtime. Kelsey Twist picked up her fourth goal of the game with 2:35 left in the second overtime to give the Cardinal the big road win, 14-13.

The loss drops the 15th-ranked Irish to 4-6 on the season while Stanford improves to 10-2 overall. The loss was the sixth this season that the Irish have dropped to ranked teams on their schedule.

Notre Dame was led offensively by senior Angela Dixon (Pennsauken, N.J.) who scored three goals and senior All-American candidate Danielle Shearer (Hampstead, Md.) who added two goals and two assists in the loss. Lauren Fischer (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.), Crysti Foote (Fr., Suffern, N.Y.) and Meredith Simon (Jr., Flemington, N.J.) each had two goals for the Irish. Stanford got six points from Kelsey Twist (four goals, two assists) and four goals from Megan Burker to lead the Cardinal attack.

For the second game in a row and the third time in the last four contests, the Irish fell behind 3-0 in the first six minutes of the game, but this time came from behind to lead most of the game. Nina Patano scored twice and Burker got her first of the game just 5:33 into the game.

Shearer (two goals) and Lauren Fischer evened the game at 3-3 with three goals in the span of 32 seconds.

Claire Calzonetti and Twist made it 5-3, before Foote cut the deficit to 5-4. Twist's second goal of the afternoon put Stanford ahead 6-4, before Anne Riley (Sr., Marblehead, Mass.), Simon and Dixon gave the Irish their first lead at 7-6 with 2:18 left in the first half. Burker's second goal of the game with just 10 seconds left in the half sent the game to the first intermission tied at 7-7.

In the second half, Notre Dame got a pair of goals from Dixon and single goals from Fischer and Simon with Simon's free-position goal with 7:10, putting the Irish ahead 11-10. Burker scored her fourth goal of the game with 1:32 left in regulation to send the game to overtime.

Foote's second goal of the game 1:54 into the first overtime put the Irish ahead 12-11, but Stanford's Cassie Harvey scored 13 seconds later to tie the game at 12-12. Abby Owen (Jr., Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) burst through the middle with 2:03 left to put Notre Dame ahead 13-12. The Irish then controlled the draw and went into a stall. With less than 40 seconds left, the Irish turned the ball over and Julie Calzonetti tied the game with 18 seconds left to send the game to a second overtime at 13-13.

The Cardinal got the lone goal of the second overtime when Twist capped her four-goal day with the game-winning goal with 2:35 left. The Irish had one last offensive chance, but lost the ball in the Stanford end and the Cardinal were able to kill off the final minute-and-a-half for the win.

In the game, Stanford goalkeeper Christina Saikus played all 72 minutes making 10 saves on the game. Jen White (Sr., Annapolis, Md.) started the game, but was pulled with 11:24 left in the first half. She returned with 12:13 left in the game after Stanford tied the game at 10-10.
