Notre Dame, Ind. - Notre Dame women's lacrosse coach Tracy Coyne has announced the 2005 women's lacrosse captains for the upcoming spring season that starts in this weekend at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio on Sunday, Feb. 27.

Seniors Carol Dixon (Pennsauken, N.J.), Jess Mikula (Chester, Md.) and Lindsay Shaffer (Seneca Falls, N.Y.) were selected by their teammates to serve as team captains for the 2005 season. All three players will be in their first seasons as team captains for the Notre Dame lacrosse program.

In making the announcement, Coyne said, "As a group, Carol, Jess and Lindsay have been a part of our winning tradition. Their leadership will be a guiding force behind our success this season. They are true leaders and will be a positive influence on the rest of the team."

Dixon starts her second season as Notre Dame's top goalkeeper. In her first season in goal (2004), Dixon played all but 3:28 minutes, turning in a 12-5 record with an 8.57 goals-against average and a .505 save percentage. Her 12 wins were the second-best total for an Irish goalkeeper in the program's history as was her 8.57 goals-against mark. Her goals against was 14th in the nation last season.

Mikula had a break through season in 2004, garnering second team all-BIG EAST honors. She scored one goal with 33 ground balls and 22 caused turnovers for the defense. Her 33 ground balls were fourth best on the team and second best among defensive players. The 22 caused turnovers tied her for second on the team with midfielder Abby Owen. Mikula was selected to the 2005 preseason all-BIG EAST team in voting by the league's coaches.

Shaffer broke into the starting lineup midway through the 2004 season and has never looked back. One of the team's top one-on-one defenders, Shaffer had 15 ground balls and nine caused turnovers on the year. She is part of a veteran defensive corps that will be the backbone of the 2005 Notre Dame women's lacrosse team.

The Irish travel to Ohio University for a 1:00 p.m. game on Sunday and then open the home schedule on Thursday, March 3 versus third-ranked Northwestern. That game is scheduled to be played at the Loftus Sports Center and will begin at 4:30 p.m.
