Crysti Foote Leads Canada To 12-5 Win Over Wales In Women's Lacrosse World Cup Opener
June 23, 2005 Annapolis, Md. - Notre Dame junior midfielder Crysti Foote (Suffern, N.Y.) scored six goals to lead Canada to a 12-5 win over Wales in the opening game of the 2005 International Federation of Women's Lacrosse Associations (IFWLA) World Cup at the Naval Academy's Glenn Warner Field Thursday afternoon. Vermont's Jennifer Johnson added three goals and three assists, James Madison's Brook McKenzie scored twice and James Madison's Jess Brownridge added a goal and two assists in the Pool A win for the Canadians who will face Australia on Thursday in a 7:30 p.m. game. For her outstanding performance in the game, Foote was named the Player of the Match for Canada. Playing in the first international game of her career, Foote wasted little time in getting her first goal as she staked Canada to a 1-0 lead just 1:26 into the game, converting a Troy Santos pass. The third team IWLCA All-American at Notre Dame would then sandwich her second goal between two goals by Johnson for a 4-0 lead with 15:29 left in the first half. "Crysti had quite a performance for her first international game," said Canada's head coach Tracy Coyne who also is Foote's head coach at Notre Dame. "Scoring the first goal of the game was big, as it helped get us off to a fast start. She and Jen Johnson worked well together. This was Canada's first time in the A Division, so we wanted to get off to a strong start in the tournament." Wales answered Canada's four-goal run with the final three goals of the opening half, led by attacker Laura Warren who picked up two of her three goals to send the game to halftime with Canadians holding a one-goal edge at 4-3. Canada came out fast to start the second half as Brownridge scored just 28 seconds into the half and Foote converted a Johnson feed just 30 seconds later for a 6-3 lead. Wales answered back with a pair of goals to make it 6-5 with 24:21 left in the game, but from there Canada took over, scoring the final six goals of the game over the final 15 minutes for the 12-5 victory. Foote got her final three goals of the day, scoring twice in 32 seconds with 14:22 and 13:50 left and then closed the scoring for the Canadians with the final goal of the game with 4:47 left. Canada outshot Wales by a 26-10 margin. Jennifer Cassidy and Kristen Haldeman played 30 minutes each for Canada and made one save. Karen Owen had six saves for Wales. Foote led Canada with nine shots on goal and five draw controls. As a member of the Notre Dame lacrosse team, she scored a career-high five goals (eight points) in a game this season versus Ohio University.
