Irish Turn in Stellar Performances on Day Two of Alex Wilson

NOTRE DAME, Ind.- Notre Dame's men's and women's track and field teams turned in outstanding performances this Saturday at the Alex Wilson Invitational on the campus of Notre Dame. Notre Dame junior Mike Brown, 1998 BIG EAST champion in the pole vault, won the pole vault with a height of 16-7 1/4 and narrowly missed automatically qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Senior All-American Danny Payton ran the seventh-fastest time in Notre Dame history as he won the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.12. Sophomore Tim Kober won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.07, and sophomore Chris Cochran won the 60-meter dash as he ran to a time of 6.89. Terry Wray placed first in the 500-meter run with a time of 1:03.28 and Travis Davey ran to a time of 22.14 as he placed first in the 200-meter dash.

On the women's side, Notre Dame freshman Janelle Reklau captured first-place honors in the long jump as she finished with a leap of 17-8 1/4. Junior Nadia Schmiedt ran away with the 400-meter dash as she finished with a first-place time of 55.33, nearly two seconds ahead of her nearest competitor, and senior Berit Junker narrowly won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:12.12, just one-hundredth of a second ahead of Magdalena Pastza of Lewis University. Freshman Carri Lenz and junior Erin Newman record first-place finishes in the 200-meter dash and 1,000-meter run as they finished with times of 25.04 and 3:02.70 respectively.
