Five Irish Track Team Members Tapped for USTCA's All-American Squad

Honors based on '99 NCAA Indoor Track Championship performances .

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Five members of the Notre Dame track team have been named All-Americans by the United States Track Coaches Association, based on their performances in the '99 NCAA Indoor Track Championships.

The USTCA accords All-America honors to the first eight United States citizens in each event.

Irish All-America honorees for '99 are:

  • Senior Mike Brown (Rancho Sante Fe, Calif.), who broke the Notre Dame record with his career-best 17-10 1/2, good for a tie for sixth place in the pole vault.

  • Junior JoAnna Deeter (Glen Ellyn, Ill.), who broke the Notre Dame record in the 5,000 meters with her time of 16:10.16, good for sixth place.

  • Senior Antonio Arce (Palmdale, Calif.), who finished 10th in the mile at 4:13.32 after running 4:04.14 in his heat.

  • Junior Jennifer Engelhardt (Battle Creek, Mich.), who finished 12th in the high jump at 5-8 (she finished ninth as a freshman after jumping 5-8 1/2).

  • Junior Marshaun West (Sikeston, Mo.), who finished sixth in the long jump at 24-10.

    The five indoor All-Americans are the most by the Irish since 1997, when seven Notre Dame athletes earned that honor indoors -- Jeff Hojnacki, Danny Payton, Jason Rexing and Derek Seiling in the distance medley relay (eighth place), Allen Rossum in the 55 meters (seventh), Dominque Calloway in the 55-meter hurdles (11th) and Engelhardt in the high jump.
