NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The Notre Dame men's and women's track and field squads each took first place last Saturday, April 1, in the teams' first and only home outdoor meet. The Irish broke seven Monogram Track records and five Notre Dame school records in a meet which also featured teams from Miami (OH), Butler and Western Michigan. The men finished first with 227.5 points followed by Western Michigan (216.5), Miami (153) and Butler (43). The women took first with 237.5 points with Miami (141.5) second, Western Michigan (131) third and Butler (86) fourth.

Quad meet recap -- Both the men's and women's 4x100-meter relay teams turned in an impressive efforts as both teams set new school records. The women's team finished its race in 46.32 and was made up of freshman Tameisha King (Mableton, Ga.), junior Carri Lenz (London, Ont.), freshman Kymia Love (Memphis, Tenn.) and sophomore Liz Grow (New Braunfels, Texas). The men's team, junior Travis Davey (St. James, N.Y.), senior Chris Cochran (Crystal Lake, Ill.), freshman Tom Gilbert (Rock Falls, Ill.) and senior Marshaun West (Sikeston, Mo.) finished in 40.22, beating the old record of 40.68 set back in 1991.

One of the many highlights of the day for the Notre Dame women's team was the double-record setting day by freshman Jamie Volkmer (Kearney, Neb.). She started off the afternoon by setting a school and track record in the triple jump (12.16m/39-10 3/4) and then cleared 11-5 in the pole vault later in the day for another track/school record. Volkmer now holds both the indoor and outdoor school records in both events.

Grow and King also had impressive showings in their individual events. After Grow anchored the school record-setting 4X100 relay, she took first place in the 200 (24.67) and 400 (54.16, a track record) meters. King was a triple-event winner in the 100 meter hurdles (14.53), the 100 meters (12.48) and the long jump (5.94m/19-6).

Chris Cochran continued the string of undefeated Irish athletes on the day by winning the men's 100 (10.77) and 200 (21.55) meters as well as being a member of the 4X100 team.

Upcoming -- The Notre Dame track and field squads head out on the road for the remainder of the outdoor season. The Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio (April 8) is next followed by the Mt.SAC relays (April 15-16) in Walnut, Calif.
