    SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The University of Notre Dame rowing team logged eight runner-up finishes against top competition Saturday on the opening day of races at the Lake Natoma Invitational.

    The No. 12 Irish opened the morning session against No. 1 USC and Kansas, keeping pace with the top crew in the nation. Notre Dame's varsity four, coxswain Danni Schneider, Kelsey Murphy, Ellen Gleadow, Stella Willoughby and Kiersten DeHaven, recorded a second place time of 7:24.20 to finish just behind the top ranked Trojans (7:20.10).

    In the second heat of second varsity eight racing, coxswain Christina Dines, Paige Aiello, Teresa Blumenstein, Ingrid Woelfel, Carlee Beckler, Rose Doerfler, Kelsey Haddad, Kelsey Sekanick and Teresa Rubinger led Notre Dame to a runner-up result. The Irish launch navigated the course in 6:47.30 to finish within four seconds of USC's time of 6:43.40.

    The Notre Dame varsity eight, Abby Meyers,Joanna Poinsatte, Joanna Mulvey, Stephanie O'Neill, Courtney Gaberino, Erin Boxberger, Ailish Sheehan, Anna Kottkamp and Molly Bruggeman, clocked in at 6:38.00 even for second-place honors behind USC (6:34.30) in the fastest race during the morning session.

    In second varsity four racing, the Notre Dame crew of coxswain Mikaela Prego, Kendra Rask, Madelynn Conlin, Hayley Johnson and Elizabeth Kelley posted a time of 7:43.40 to stick with No. 2 California (7:38.50).

    During the afternoon session, the Irish varsity four (7:41.50) and second varsity eight (6:51.30) earned runner-up results against the second-ranked Golden Bears, while the varsity eight (6:33.50) closed within three and a half seconds of the Cal launch for its fastest race split of the season.

    Notre Dame's second varsity four capped the successful stretch with a 7:35.60 run to finish just behind Cal (7:29.00).

    The Irish will compete against No. 15 Wisconsin and No. 17 Washington Sunday during the second day of racing at the Lake Natoma Invitational.
