NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame rowing team was tabbed as the No. 14 team in the 2013 preseason CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll that was released earlier this week.
The ranking is the highest achieved by the Irish in the preseason poll since the 2007 Notre Dame team began its season as the No. 11 crew in the country.
Notre Dame won nine races last weekend at the Oak Ridge/Cardinal Invitational in the spring’s first regatta. The Irish varsity launches added five runner-up finishes against defending NCAA champion Virginia during the season opening races on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
In recognition of its two wins, and a solid run in a second-place effort against No. 1 Virginia at the Oak Ridge/Cardinal Invitational, Notre Dame’s first varsity eight was named the BIG EAST Boat of the Week by the conference office on Wednesday. The Irish eight defeated Duke and Kansas (Saturday) and Louisville and Miami (Sunday), finishing within six seconds of No. 1 Virginia during an afternoon launch last Saturday.
Notre Dame travels to East Lansing, Mich. March 30 to compete against Iowa, Michigan and Michigan State in a four-team race on Lake Ovid.
