Notre Dame Beats Missouri 11-0 in Exhibition

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Notre Dame's women's soccer team used a hat trick by junior Monica Gerardo and two goals each by sophomores Jenny Streiffer and Jenny Heft to beat visiting Missouri 11-0 in an exhibition game at Alumni Field. The Irish, who are coming off a school-record 24 wins in the 1996 and a trip to their third-straight NCAA title game, open their 1997 season when they play host to BIG EAST foe St. John's on Friday, Aug. 29, at Alumni Field at 7:30 p.m.. The Tigers open up against Michigan on Friday at Kentucky at 5:00 p.m.

Streiffer scored what would be the game-winning goal just over two minutes into the contest when she headed a cross from Holly Manthei to put Notre Dame up 1-0. Sophomore Kara Brown and Gerardo scored back-to-back goals in a two-minute span at the 16-minute mark. The teams battled through a scoreless remainder of the first half with the Irish holding the 3-0 lead at halftime.

Junior Laura Vanderberg scored six minutes into the second half before Heft scored twice in the next three minutes to break the game open in building a 6-0 lead. Gerardo would score twice more and Streiffer and freshman Meotis Erikson each added goals. Freshman Monica Gonzalez closed out the scoring at 76:18 for Notre Dame, which out shot Missouri 47-3 in the contest. Sophomore goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene made two saves in recording the shutout.
