NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Notre Dame's sophomore All-American midfielder Anne Makinen scored twice to lead the third-ranked Irish women's soccer to a 3-0 win over Indiana on Friday at the KeyBank Soccer Classic. In the first game of the tournament, the 25th-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team scored three goals in the first 20 minutes of the game on its way to a 4-1 win over Missouri. Notre Dame will face Wake Forest on Sun., Sept. 25, at 1:00 p.m., while Indiana will play Missouri at 11:00 a.m.
The Irish outshot the Hoosiers 22-3 but found the net just three times. Makinen scored twice on corner kicks from junior All-American defender Jen Grubb. Her first goal came at 34:10 when she volleyed in a corner kick for a 1-0 lead.
Irish junior Jenny Heft scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season when Meotis Erikson stripped the Hoosiers of the ball and dished to Heft who dribbled through the Indiana backline. She made it 2-0 just 1:38 after Makinen scored at 35:48 when she slipped her shot past Hoosier goalkeeper Ashley Davis and into the left corner from two yards out from the right post.
Makinen scored the final goal when she a headed a Grubb corner kick to the far post into the net at 79:08. The win improved the Irish to 7-1-0 while the Hoosiers fall to 5-2-0. The game marked Notre Dame's ninth consecutive win over Indiana and its 33rd straight win over a Big 10 team, dating back to a 1989 loss to Michigan State.
In the first game of the KeyBank Soccer Classic, Anne Shropshire led Wake Forest with two goals, while Meghan Suddes scored and added two assists. The Demon Deacons outshot Missouri 17-10 for the game to improve to 5-2-1 on the season. The Tigers fall to 3-3-1.
Stacy Roeck scored the game's first goal at 3:50 when she caught the Missouri goalkeeper off her line on a cross and fired a shot into the left corner of the net from the top of the box. Suddes then scored what would be the game-winning goal at 8:59 after a corner kick. After Shropshire made it 3-0, Kristin Boekcer put the Tigers on the board at 22:03 when she angled in a shot to the lower left corner of the net from the right corner. Shropshire added another goal at 48:00 for the game's final goal.
