Women's Soccer Holds Boston College Shotless in 2-0 Win
NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Notre Dame's second-ranked women's soccer held visiting Boston College without a shot in the contest and scored a goal in each half for a 2-0 shutout. Shannon Boxx and Meotis Erikson tallied the game's only goals. With the win, the Irish improve to 11-0-1 overall and 6-0-0 in BIG EAST Conference games. The Eagles fall to 5-4-1, 3-4-0.
"Our defenders played really well in the back," said Notre Dame head coach Chris Petrucelli. "They were really hard to play against since they were so defensive. They just packed it in and didn't seem to want to go forward or try to score at all."
After the Irish failed to connect on their first eight shots of the game, Boxx scored the game's first goal at 31:45 thanks to a feed from Jenny Streiffer from the top of the box that split the Eagles' defense. Boxx settled the pass and turned and fired into the lower right corner of the net from 12 yards.
Notre Dame scored again just 3:18 into the second half on a header by Erikson. Holly Manthei dished from 20 yards at the right corner of the box to Kelly Lindsey who dribbled down the right sideline and lofted a cross to the far post to Erikson, who headed the ball from three yards out into the upper right corner for her sixth goal in the last four games.
The Irish would bombard the Eagles' net with 11 more shots in the game but could not connect as Boston College was content to play with one forward and clog the box. Notre Dame outshot Boston College 25-0 for the game. Irish goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene recorded her third straight shutout and ninth on the year without making a save.
The Irish return to action Sat., Oct. 11, with a BIG EAST road game at Georgetown.
