Notre Dame Advances to Big East Final with 7-0 Win Over Villanova
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Notre Dame's second-ranked and top-seeded women's soccer team used two goals each from Meotis Erikson and Jenny Streiffer for a 7-0 win over fourth-seeded Villanova at Yurcak Field at Rutgers to advance to its third straight Big East Championship game. The Irish will go for their third Big East title in as many yeast in the conference when they face the winner of Connecticut and Seton Hall on Sun., Nov. 9 at 12:00 p.m. With the win Notre Dame improves to 19-0-1 while Villanova falls to 8-8-2.
Erikson, a first team All-Big East and all-rookie selection, scored what would be her fourth game-winning goal at 5:46 from five yards when she one-timed a pass from the top of the box from Monica Gerardo. Streiffer made it 2-0 just 19 seconds later when she headed in a cross from Kara Brown.
Brown then scored herself when she volleyed in a cross from Gerardo at 9:01. Streiffer scored her second goal when she dribbled through the defense from 30 yards and scored from six yards into the upper left corner of the net at 21:58.
Anne Makinen closed out the scoring in the first half when she collected a failed clear at 20 yards and blasted a shot into the upper center of the net. Notre Dame went into halftime with a 5-0 lead and a 22-1 advantage in shots.
Erikson opened scoring in the second half with her second goal of the game at 49:32 when she dribbled to the left wing with a hard shot that ricocheted off a Villanova defender and into the left corner of the net. Irish goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene recorded her school-record 16th shutout of the season, facing just three shots and making one save. She lowered her goals against average to 0.25, the best mark in the country. Notre Dame outshot Villanova 38-3 in the contest.
The seven goals by the Irish tied a championship record for most goals by a team in a Big East championship game, matching the seven goals by Notre Dame in a 7-0 win over Villanova in the 1996 Big East Semifinals. The Irish are now 10-0-0 all time in conference championships, having won the Midwestern Collegiate Conference titles in 1993 and 1994 and Big East titles in 1995 and 1996.
