Notre Dame's Women Soccer Blanks Pittsburgh 5-0

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Notre Dame's second-ranked women's soccer team used two goals by Jenny Heft in the first 25 minutes of the game and rolled to a 5-0 BIG EAST Conference win over Pittsburgh on the artificial turf at Pitt Stadium. With the win, Irish improve to 5-0-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the BIG EAST. The Panthers fall to 0-2-1, 0-1-0 in BIG EAST games.

Heft scored the first of her two goals at the 12:46 mark when she took a pass from Shannon Boxx inside the box and tapped the ball past the Panther goalkeeper. Just 12 minutes later, Heft beat the extended goalkeeper to a feed from Meotis Erikson and chipped the ball into the upper right corner for a 2-0 lead. Erikson scored at 35:15 when she blasted a shot from 25 yards out into the lower left corner to send Notre Dame into haltime with a 3-0 lead.

The Irish, who outshot the Panthers 17-2 in the first half, continued to dictate play in the second half as Notre Dame outshot Pittsburgh 21-0 in the second half. Monica Gerardo opened the scoring in the second half when she headed in a Kara Brown corner kick just 1:23 into the second half. Jen Grubb blasted a direct kick into the upper right corner from 25 yards out at 56:18 to close out the scoring.

Goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene picked up her fourth shutout of the season in the net. She made two saves early in the contest when Pittsburgh's Megan Beasely collected a loose ball for a breakaway and fired two point-blank range shots at Beene from five yards from the right wing. Beene snuffed both shots, the only scoring opportunities of the game for the Panthers.

Notre Dame returns to action when it travels to West Virginia, which has opened the season with a 4-0-0 record. The two unbeaten teams will square off at the Mountaineer Soccer Complex on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 1:00 p.m.
