Fighting Irish Fan Chat - Feb. 8 ARCHIVE

Feb. 7, 2011

UND.com is debuting another of its new interactive features for the 2010-11 season, with its weekly Fighting Irish Fan Chats. UND.com will sit down for a live chat session with student-athletes, coaches and administrators making news in the world of Fighting Irish athletics. Fans are invited to join in and offer questions or comments for our guests, and if you can't join us live, each chat will be archived so you can return to UND.com at your convenience and read what your favorite Notre Dame athletic personalities have to say on a variety of topics.

Tuesday's Fighting Irish Fan Chat featured the two Notre Dame soccer coaches, as women's skipper Randy Waldrum and men's coach Bobby Clark discussed their respective squad's recent Class of 2011 signing classes, which are ranked among the nation's best.

Waldrum was named the 2010 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Mondo National Coach of the Year last month after leading Notre Dame to its third NCAA national championship, and the second in his 12-year tenure under the Golden Dome. This past season, the Fighting Irish posted a 21-2-2 record, capped by a scintillating six-match run through the NCAA Championship in which Notre Dame outscored its opponents, 15-1, ending with a 1-0 win over previously-unbeaten Stanford in the title match on Dec. 5 in Cary, N.C. Waldrum recently announced that six talented young student-athletes (including five of the nation's top 60 players) have signed National Letters of Intent to attend Notre Dame this season and play for the Fighting Irish, adding to a returning crop of players that includes seven starters who are eager to defend the program's latest national championship.

Meanwhile, Clark and his staff recently revealed their five-player Class of 2011, which includes four NSCAA prep All-Americans, three of whom also earned state Player of the Year honors in their respective locales. Clark and the Fighting Irish posted a 10-6-4 record in 2010, earning a place in the second round of the NCAA Championship. Notre Dame also four players selected in the recent Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft and the league's Supplemental Draft, continuing the program's run of success in producing professional level talent.
