Notre Dame women's soccer senior midfielder Anne Makinen
(Helsinki, Finland) collected the fourth All-America honor of her
storied career while being named the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC)
Collegiate Soccer Player of the Year, as announced Thursday by the
National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Makinen was one of six Notre Dame players named to the NSCAA
adidas all-Great Lakes Region team, with senior defender Kelly Lindsey
(Omaha, Neb.) and junior goalkeeper Liz Wagner (Spring, Texas) joining
Makinen on the first-time all-region squad.
Irish senior forward Meotis Erikson (Kennewick, Wash.) and
sophomore defender Vanessa Pruzinsky (Trumbull, Conn.) were named to the
second team all-region squad while freshman forward Amy Warner
(Albuquerque, N.M.) was a third-team selection.
Makinen joins midfielder Cindy Daws ('96) as Notre Dame's second
recipient of the MAC national player-of-the-year award. Notre Dame and
North Carolina (6) are the only schools to produce multiple MAC winners
in the award's 10-year history, with Portland and Santa Clara producing
the other two previous winners.
Makinen was a landslide winner for the 2000 MAC Award, amassing
183 voting points (Penn State forward Christie Welsh was next, with 86),
and she likewise is considered the leading candidate for the prestigious
Hermann Trophy national player-of-the-year award, to be presented on
Saturday, Dec. 9 in Charlotte, N.C. (site of the Men's College Cup).
Makinen earned third-team NSCAA All-America honors as a freshman
in 1997 before garnering second-team honors in 1998 and '99. She is the
third Notre Dame player ever to collect four NSCAA All-America honors,
joining midfielder Holly Manthei ('98) and defender Jen Grubb ('00) in
that distinction.
Makinen and Duke forward Ali Curtis (winner of the men's MAC
award) will be honored on Jan. 5, 2001, during a banquet at the Missouri
Athletic Club in St. Louis, when they will be presented with the
traditional crystal ball trophies. The featured speaker at this year's
MAC banquet will be Tony Meola, winner of the award in 1989 and the Most
Valuable Player this year in Major League Soccer for the Kansas City

Notre Dame players have combined for nine NSCAA first-team
All-America honors, with Makinen becoming the first Irish player to be
so honored since 1997.

ALL-REGION NOTES
Wagner, Erikson and Warner earlier were named to the
all-tournament team for their performances during the 2000 NCAA
Championship while Wagner finished as the NCAA Division I leader for
lowest season goals-against average (0.39).
Notre Dame players accounted for six of the 34 players named the
Great Lakes Region teams, with Miami of Ohio (4) and Marquette (3)
representing the only other schools with more than two selections.
Makinen has been named 1st team all-region during all four years
of her ND career, joining Manthei ('98) and Grubb as the only Irish
players to own that distinction.
Warner is one of just three freshmen named to the 2000 all-Great
Lakes Regional teams, joining Wisconsin-Milwaukee midfielder Jenny
Kundert (1st team) and Marshall midfielder Amanda McMahon (2nd team) in
that distinction.
Seven ND freshmen have earned all-district honors, with Warner
becoming the first Irish freshman so honored since 1997.
At least one ND midfielder has been named 1st team all-region
every season since '92 while an Irish D has earned 1st-team all-region
honors every season since '94 ('99 is the only season in that seven-year
stretch that an ND goalkeeper has not been a 1st-teamer).
ND women's soccer players have combined for 36 all-region honors
(since '92), with Manthei and Makinen headlining 14 M honors, along with
Daws (1st team three times, 2nd team once), Ragen Coyne (1st team in
'92) and Jenny Streiffer (1st team in '98).
ND's 14 all-region Fs honors have included three each by Erikson
(once on all three teams), Streiffer (1st team twice, 2nd team once) and
Michelle McCarthy (1st team once, 2nd team twice), plus 1st and 2nd-team
selections for Jenny Heft and 2nd-team selections of Rosella Guerrero
and Monica Gerardo.
Irish Ds have combined for 10 all-region awards, including
Grubb's four honors, three 1st-team selections of Kate Sobrero and
Lindsey's 3rd-team selection in '98.
Jen Renola was named the region's top goalkeeper from 1994-96
while LaKeysia Beene earned the honor in 1997 and '98 (she was 2nd team
in '99).

ANNE MAKINEN - Became 13th player in Division I women's soccer history
to reach 50 goals and 50 assists in her career (65G-56A) S finished 4A
shy of becoming sixth 60-60 player S ranks 5th in ND history for points,
4th in goals and 5th in assists S led Irish during 2000 season in pts
(43), goals (14), assists (15) and game-winning goals (6) while
appearing in 24 of 25 games, with 22 starts S also had primary assist on
four GWGs, plus the corner kick at Villanova that produced the GWG S
bailed out ND in four of the five games where the Irish failed to score
in the 1st half (all but the 0-0 tie at UConn), by netting ND's first
