Notre Dame Softball Downs Valparaiso 6-2

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Notre Dame's softball team scored four runs in the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie for a 6-2 win over Valparaiso in the first game of a doubleheader that was added to the schedule on Tuesday and then shortened to one game due to rain. The two teams will play their regularly scheduled doubleheader on Thurs., April 2, at Ivy Field at 4:30 p.m. With the win, the Irish improve to 13-16 while the Crusaders fall to 3-10.

Tara King drove in three runs of Notre Dame's six runs, including a two-out, two-run double in the fifth to drive in the winning run. In the fifth, Amy Laboe, who reached on a fielders choice, and Sarah Mathison, who singled to set up King's two-out double, both scored to break the 2-2 tie. Lizzy Lemire then singled in King and scored on a double by Kris McCleary.

Giampaolo opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a walk and went to second on an error on Laboe's groundball. Melanie Alkire singled to send home Giampaolo followed by a sacrifice fly by King to score Laboe for a 2-0 lead.

The Crusaders came back with a run in the top of the second when Missy Fekete walked, advanced to third on an error and scored on an error. Valparaiso tied the game in the third when Kari Wiseman singled, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Amy Govert.

With the score tied at 2-2, the Irish wasted a leadoff double by Laboe in the third. The Crusaders then loaded the bases with one out in the fourth but hit into a double play to end the inning.

Kelly Nichols relieved Alkire in the fourth inning to pick up the win and improve to 4-4 while allowing no runs and three hits in four innings worked. Alkire struck out four and gave up just two hits and one earned run in three innings. Starter Jill Campbell took the loss for Valparaiso as she was tagged for six runs, five earned, on seven hits with two walks in four and a third innings pitched.
