Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Providence

Irish on five-game win streak.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. Notre Dames used a one-hitter by freshman pitcher Jennifer Sharron in the first game and a two-double, two-RBI performance from freshman Lizzy Lemire in the second game to sweep host Providence 3-0 and 3-2 in a BIG EAST doubleheader on Saturday. The wins put the Irish at 17-16 on the year with a five-game winning streak and a 3-2 mark in the BIG EAST. The Friars fall to 10-13-2, 0-4-1 in the BIG EAST. Notre Dame plays its final BIG EAST road games of the year on Sunday with a doubleheader at defending BIG EAST champion Boston College.

Sharron, who three a complete-game, two-hit shutout against Valparaiso on Thursday, was just as impressive on Saturday as she allowed the Friars just a second-inning double as she struck out seven batters with one walk in facing five batters over the minimum for seven innings. Lemire hit her first of three doubles on the day to lead off the second inning, went to third on a sacrifice and scored on a suicide squeeze by Kelly Nichols who stole second and third before Jenn Giampaolo singled her home for a 2-0 lead. Freshman Melanie Alkire led off the third inning with a solo homer, the first of her career, for the 3-0 lead.

Lemire sparked the Irish once again in game two by walking in the second inning, stealing second and scoring on two passed balls. She then doubled home Alkire and Amy Laboe with two outs in the third to put the Irish up 3-0.

In game two, Angela Bessolo threw five and two-thirds innings to pick up her fourth win of the season while allowing Providence just two runs on six hits with six strikeouts and just one walk. Kelly Nichols relieved Bessolo with two outs in the sixth after the Friars had scored twice in the sixth and had runners at first and third. Nichols pitched the final one and one-third innings, retiring the final four batters she faced to record her third save of the season and NCAA record 21st of her career.
