NOTRE DAME, IND.- The Notre Dame softball program announced this afternoon, Sept. 14, that it will be hosting the first annual Worth Fall Classic from Oct. 13-15 at Ivy Field on the campus of University of Notre Dame. The tournament will include free admission and a family friendly environment including giveaways.

"This is the first time we've held a fall tournament with this many nationally talented teams," Head Softball Coach Deanna Gumpf commented. "These teams (Michigan, Nebraska, UIC and Western Michigan) are among the top programs in the country. All the teams have been competitive at regional tournaments, while two of the teams have made the College World Series. It's exciting to have these sort of team on campus in the fall."

The weekend will begin on Friday, Oct. 13 with a game against Michigan starting at 7 p.m. Michigan is consistent top-25 program that won the NCAA College World Series during the 2005 season.

The Irish will play a pair of games on Saturday, Oct. 14 starting at 9 a.m. against perennial national power Nebraska. Notre Dame will play its second game of the afternoon against Western Michigan at 4:30 p.m.

Notre Dame wraps up the tournament with a 3 p.m. match up against UIC on Sunday, Oct. 15.

"I think a fall tournament presents a great opportunity to evaluate your team on the field after five weeks of practice," Coach Gumpf stated. "It allows us as a coaching staff to determine where our program stands on both a regional and a national level. I'm looking forward to the challenge and know that the Notre Dame softball fans are as well."
