Notre Dame downed Western Michigan 4-3 Wednesday on a crisp night at Melissa Cook Stadium (John Whitty)

Oct. 10, 2012

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Behind a strong pitching effort and timely base hits, the Notre Dame softball team closed its fall schedule with a 4-3 win over Western Michigan Wednesday night at Melissa Cook Stadium.

Freshman Casey Africano (Huntington Beach, Calif.) closed her sizzling fall with a solo home run over the wall in right center field to spark the Fighting Irish offense. Africano hit four round trippers in four starts during the autumn slate.

Junior pitcher Laura Winter (San Diego, Calif.) had command of the circle during the first three innings, striking out seven of the nine Broncos she faced. Winter finished her outing by striking out all six Western Michigan hitters in the second and third inning.

Senior Brittany O'Donnell (Avon, N.J.) struck out the final six batters she faced to earn the save.
