#24 Notre Dame Returns from Hawaii

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Notre Dame's defending BIG EAST champion women's
swimming and diving team returns to Rolfs Aquatic Center following a 14-day
trip to Hawaii over Christmas break. The Irish finished second at the
Rainbow Invitational and later beat Hawaii and Iowa in dual-meet action. Notre
Dame swims its only home dual meets of the season this weekend when it faces
Miami on Fri., Jan. 16, at 4:00 p.m., and Illinois on Sat., Jan. 17, at 1:00 p.m.

Hawaii Review: Senior Linda Gallo (Red Bank, N.J.) and freshman
Carrie Nixon (Ouray, Colo.) led Notre Dame to a second-place finish, beating
21st-ranked Illinois and 18th-ranked Wisconsin which earlier defeated the Irish
at the Minnesota Invitational. Fifth-ranked Michigan defeated Notre Dame for the
second straight invitational after beating the Irish at the Notre Dame Invitational
    in December.

Gallo was a double winner at the Rainbow Invitational, winning the 200
freestyle in a school-record 1:51.33. Gallo also won the 500 freestyle in 4:50.44
with freshman Kristen Van Saun (Lawrence, Kan.) in third in 4:57.75. Nixon took
second in the 50 freestyle in 24.32 and was fourth in the 100 butterfly in 57.40.

The Irish completed their Hawaiian training trip by winning a double dual meet
against Hawaii (157-84) and Iowa (140-91). Notre Dame won seven of the 13 events
with Gallo swimming to another school record in the 1000 freestyle in 10:01.38. Van
Saun won the 500 freestyle while Nixon won the 50 freestyle. Sophomores Rhiana
Saunders (The Woodlands, Texas) and Gina Ketelhohn (Brown Deer, Wis.) swept the
    one-meter and three-meter diving events.

Gallo Superb In Senior Season: Senior captain Linda Gallo is in the midst
of one of the greatest individual freestyle performances in the Irish women's swimming
and diving history. She has the fastest times both for the Irish and among the BIG
EAST teams in the 200, 500, 1000 and 1650 freestyle and is among the top five on the
team in eight events. She has broken three school records, including two of her own
schools records from last year. She won the 1000 freestyle in 10:01.38 against
Hawaii and Iowa, won the 1650 freestyle in 16:34.43 at the Minnesota Invitational
and won the 500 freestyle at the Rainbow Invitational in 4:50.44, all in school
record times. She has won seven dual-meet events and six events in invitational
    competitions already.

This Week For The Irish: Two ranked teams come to Rolfs Aquatic Center to
take on Notre Dame. BIG EAST rival and 25th-ranked Miami will face the Irish on Fri.,
Jan. 16, at 4:00 p.m. Miami led Notre Dame by 103 point at the 1997 BIG EAST
championship before the Irish rallied to beat the Hurricanes by a 661-547.5 score as
Miami finished second for the sixth straight year.

Illinois enters the meet currently ranked 21st with a perfect 8-0 dual-meet
record. The Fighting Illini and the Irish both have beaten Iowa, Hawaii and Southern
Illinois in dual meets in 1997-98. The two teams swam at the Rainbow Invitational in
which Notre Dame finished second with 168.5 points while Illinois was third with
112.5. The two teams will square off on Sat., Jan. 17, at 1:00 p.m.

Nixon Leads Freshmen: Carrie Nixon, after setting a school record in the 50
freestyle in her first collegiate event, showed that she will be a key swimmer for the
Irish. She is unbeaten in her five dual-meet races, winning the 50 and 100 freestyle
against Pittsburgh and Southern Illinois and 50 freestyle against Hawaii and Iowa.
She won the 50 freestyle at the Minnesota Invitational with her fastest time of the
year in 23.41 in the trials, breaking her own school record. Nixon was second in the
50 and 100 freestyle at the Rainbow Invitational and was third in the 50 freestyle at
    the Notre Dame Invitational.

All-Americans Return: Notre Dame's two returning All-Americans, Shannon
Suddarth (Topeka, Kan.) in breaststroke and Alison Newell (Parker, Colo.) in butterfly,
have continued as sophomores what they accomplished last year as freshman. The duo
have led the Irish in the individual stroke events as well as on the medley relays.
Suddarth was a double winner in the 100 and 200 breaststroke against both Pittsburgh
and Southern Illinois and finished second in the 200 breaststroke at both the Notre
Dame Invitational and the Rainbow Invitational. Newell won the 200 butterfly against
Pittsburgh and was second in the 200 butterfly at the Minnesota Invitational. Suddarth
leads the BIG EAST in the 200 breaststroke while Newell leads in the 200 butterfly.
