The Notre Dame women's swimming and diving team, ranked 13th in the nation, improved its dual-meet record to 5-0 on the season, defeating Iowa 183-61 on Jan. 8, in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Irish won 12 of 13 races versus the Hawkeyes in an meet which featured an unusual order of events that do not usually appear in a typical collegiate dual meet.
Senior Carrie Nixon won four events, winning the 100 individual medley, the 75 freestyle and was a member of the first-place 150 butterfly and 150 freestyle relay. Nixon, who missed all of last season with a shoulder injury, now has 13 individual and 13 relay wins thus far in 2001-02.
Nixon teamed with sophomore Lisa D'Olier and freshman Hannah Pawlewicz in claiming the 150 butterfly relay. D'Olier was also a member of the winning 200 medley relay, along with seniors Kelly Hecking and Allison Lloyd and freshman Katie Eckholt.
Hecking won her 10th individual race of the season, taking the 75 backstroke in 42.23. Sophomore Danielle Hulick was second in 42.71, while freshman Kristen Peterson and sophomore Jessica Roberts closed out the Notre Dame one-two-three-four finish in 43.54 and 43.66, respectively. Hecking, Hulick and Peterson also teamed to win the 150 backstroke relay in 1:21.20.
Lloyd also had a good meet as she won two individual events claiming the 75 breaststroke and the 75 butterfly. Sophomore Lisa Garcia was also a double-event winner as she was first in the 300 freestyle and the 300 individual medley.
Freshman
Kelli Barton was the other individual event winner, outdistancing the field in the 600 freestyle in a time of 6:03.12. Junior
Nicole Kohrt was second (6:16.92) and classmate
Lindsay Moorhead was third (6:14.68).
The Irish women return home on Friday-Saturday, Jan. 18-19 for the Notre Dame Dual Meet Invitational at the Rolfs Aquatic Center. Meet time Friday is 6:00 p.m., while Saturday's races are at 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
