The University of Notre Dame women's swimming team won 12 of 16 events on its way to a 188-112 win over BIG EAST foe Pittsburgh on Friday night at Rolfs Aquatic Center.
The Irish won both relays and picked up individual wins from Kim Holden (200 fly, 100 free), Catherine Galleti (50 free), Emma Reaney (200 free), Kelly Ryan (100 back, 200 back), Lauren Stauder (100 breast), Sarah Dotzel (100 fly), Jenny Chiang (3M Dive) and Allison Casareto (1M Dive).
The No. 18/20 Irish return to action Saturday afternoon when they welcome in two-time defending BIG EAST champion and No. 19/22 Louisville to Rolfs Aquatic Center. The first event gets underway at 1 p.m.
200 Medley Relay: The Irish began the meet in fine fashion, claiming the full complement of hardware as the first place squad (1:43.05) of Kim Holden, Emma Reaney, Cat Galletti, and Kelly Ryan led the way, followed by silver-winners (1:46.84) Sarah Dotzel, Lauren Stauder, Lauren Scott, and Genevieve Bradford, and chased by the third place finishers (1:47.03) Courtney Whyte, Christen McDonough, Genna Heidkamp, and Mikelle Masciantonio.
1,000 Free: Pitt responded to the Irish sweep of the relay with a sweep of their own, hoarding the medals in the distance free ... Kelsey Herbst (10:13.72) earned gold, followed by teammates Lauren Matevish (10:19.07) and Kaleigh Ritter (10:20.40) ... Erin Foley (10:20.87) was close behind for the Irish, posting the team's highest finish at fourth place.
200 Free: Reaney (1:50.55) jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back, earning her second gold of the night ... Jaime Malandra (1:54.31) picked up fourth for the Irish, just out-touching teammate Bridget Casey (1:54.33) who earned fifth.
100 Back: The Irish women posted their second sweep of the night, this time led by Ryan (56.16) ... Galletti (57.44) picked up silver for her second medal of the night ... Whyte (57.97) rounded out the medal stand to earn bronze for the team.
100 Breast: Stauder (1:04.16) pushed ahead to net the Irish another win on the night ... Sydney Golic (1:07.95) placed fourth for the Irish, followed by teammate Lauren Scott (1:08.50) who earned fifth.
200 Fly: Holden (2:02.29) continued her winning ways, picking up another individual gold and adding to her collection on the season ... Melissa Scott (2:04.13) hit the wall third ... Dotzel (2:06.56) rounded out the Irish showing with a fourth place finish.
50 Free: Galletti (23.67), using underwater breakouts that overwhelmed the competition, powered ahead to claim the splash and dash ... McDonough (24.35) was able to grab a medal as well, earning bronze in the race.
1M Dive: Allison Casareto (302.25) and Jenny Chiang (280.65) took first and second for another Irish sweep on the boards ... Emma Gaboury (270.52) placed fourth to give the Irish three divers in the top five.
100 Free: Holden (51.83) picked up her third gold on the evening for Notre Dame ... Suzanne Bessire (51.96) snagged the silver while Lauren Scott (53.49) placed fourth for the Irish.
200 Back: Ryan (2:01.27) completed the sweep of backstroke events, earning her second individual gold of the night ... Reaney (2:03.30) followed close behind her teammate to earn second place.
200 Breast: Veronica Lee of Pitt took first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:18.08 ... Lauren Stauder followed closely behind in second (2:18.71) ... Pitt's Yolandi Van Der Merwe took third in 2:22.70 and Notre Dame's Genevieve Bradford took fourth in 2:23.97 ... Freshman Sydney Golic scored a point for the Irish with her fifth-place finish (2:25.71).
500 Free: Pittsburgh's Kelsey Herbst took first in the 500 free by over three and a half seconds (4:57.99) ... Bridget Casey was the first Irish swimmer to cross the line in second (5:01.82), while Jaimie Malandra finished third in 5:01.91, just .09 after Casey ... Pitt took fourth and fifth to give the Panthers 12 points for the event.
100 Fly: Sarah Dotzel (56.21) claimed first place, closely followed by Courtney White (56.96) in second ... Bridget Casey (57.07) and Suzanne Bessire (58.81), third and fourth respectively, also contributed to the Irish sweep.
200 IM: Lauren Scott (2:09.36) took third, following Pittburgh's Joanna Budzis (207.44) and Veronica Lee (2:08.20) ... Grace Fredlake snagged fourth place with a time of 2:09.99 ... Sydney Golic (2:11.61) finished in sixth place after Pitt's Tatyanna Sarjeant (2:10.42).
3M Dive: Jenny Chang posted a score of 331.43 points to earn victory for the Irish ... teammate Allison Casareto earned 279.38 points for second ... Emma Gaboury placed fourth with a score total of 261.23 points.
400 Free Relay: After a close race, Notre Dame's A Team of Mikelle Masciantonio, Sydney Golic, Melissa Scott and Erin Foley edged out Pitt's A team of Yolandi Van Der Merwe, Kelsey Herbst, Lauren Mills and Tatyanna Sarjeant to seal the Irish victory ... The Notre Dame A team posted a time of 3:33.30 ... Notre Dame's B team (Bradford, Malandra, McDonough and Whyte) took fourth with a time of 3:43.41 behind Pitt's B squad.
