Notre Dame Women's Tennis Defeats Clemson 6-1
NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Notre Dame's 11th-ranked women's tennis
defeated No. 26 Clemson 6-1 on Monday at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. The
Irish opened the match by winning the doubles point 2-1. The teams
split at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles before Courtney Haskell and Kelley Olson
beat Clemson's Catherine Galvin and Meredith Chandler 8-4 to claim the
point for the Irish.
Notre Dame then won five of the six singles matches to clinch the win.
Jennifer Hall defeated Etresia Kruger 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles and
Marisa Velasco defeated Kate-Maree Mair 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. The
Tigers won at third singles when Notre Dame's Tiffany Gates retired to
give Galvin the 5-7, 4-1, ret. win. The Irish then swept the final
three matches to close out the win.
With the win Notre Dame improves to 5-1 while Clemson falls to 2-2. The
Irish return to the court against Pepperdine in the first round of the
National Indoor Tournament in Madison, Wis., on Feb. 20.
