NOTRE DAME, Ind. --- The University of Notre Dame women's tennis team kicked off the 2014 spring season in fine form with wins over both Western Michigan and IUPUI in Saturday's doubleheader at Eck Tennis Pavilion. The Irish took both matches 7-0.

Ten Irish student-athletes saw action in the match, with freshmen Monica Robinson, Mary Closs and Jane Fennelly all earning their first wins for Notre Dame.

"First of all, we played pretty well for a first match, but there were two big things we wanted to get accomplished," says head coach Jay Louderback. "The first one was to get our freshmen their first matches because they're always a little bit nervous. And the second was to get everyone in the lineup and get everyone chance to play. And we accomplished both of those, and everyone played well."

The No. 2 doubles team of senior Julie Sabacinski and Closs was the first off the court, defeating Meika Ashby and Tracy Kuhle, 6-2. The No. 1 team, senior Jennifer Kellner and Robinson (ranked 26th in the country) beat Kathleen Hawkins and Nini Sujashvilli, 6-4, claiming the doubles point for the Irish. After a strong first set, Closs dropped her second set to King before taking the match in a definitive super-set tie-breaker. She won the No. 4 match 6-2, 5-7, (10-1). At No. 1, Gleason was losing the first set 4-1 before coming back to win the match against Sujashvilli in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Kellner was the last one off the court, beating Ashby, 6-4, 7-5.
