Women's Tennis Defeats Northwestern
Irish advance in NCAA Midwest Regional.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. --- The University of Notre Dame women's tennis team posted a 6-2 win over Northwestern Friday in the first round of the 1998 NCAA Midwest Regional. Notre Dame, the No. 2 seed in the event, advances to Saturday's semifinal, where it will meet No. 3 seed Wisconsin at 2:00 p.m. CDT.
Wisconsin was a 5-2 winner over Michigan on Friday while No. 1 seed UCLA beat Marquette 5-2 and No. 4 seed Indiana beat Purdue 5-3. The winner of the tournament advances to the 16-team NCAA national team tournament, which begins as part of the NCAA Championship at Notre Dame on Thursday.
Notre Dame improves to 19-9 with the win this season. Freshman Michelle Dasso, the No. 19 ranked player in the country, improved her record to 29-6 on the season in singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Shannon Duffy.
Other singles winners for Notre Dame were junior Marisa Velasco at No. 3, senior Tiffany Gates at No. 4, sophomore Kelly Zalinski at No. 5 and freshman Kim Guy at No. 6.
