Irish Women’s Tennis Advance At Illinois Invitational

Irish senior Kelly Zalinski won a pair of straight set matches to advnace to the quartefinals of the A singles of the Illinois Invitational on Friday. Zalinski beat Marquette’s Laura Garcia 6-0, 7-5 and Michigan’s eighth-seeded Brooke Hart 6-2, 6-0 to set up her quarterfinal match against Texas’ top-seeded Michelle Faucher. Kim Guy also won a pair of matches to reach the quarterfinals of the B singles. She beat Iowa’s Beth Hayden 6-1, 6-1 and Michigan’s Marya Farah 6-1, 6-3 to set up her quarterfinal match against Northwestern’s Marine Piriou.

Nina Vaughan beat Iowa’s Shera Wiegler 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2) before losing to Illinois’ Eldina Fazlic 6-1, 6-4 in the second round. Becky Varnum dropped her first match to Miami’s Meredith Laughlin 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 before beating Maryland’s Jessica Johnson 6-3, 6-4 in the consolation. Lindsey Green lost her first two matches.

In the B singles, Sarah Scaringe rebounded from a first-round lost to beat Marquette’s Alex Stankovic in the consolation. Michelle Hamilton and Katie Cunha each lost twice on Friday. Cunha and Guy beat Illinois’ Carla Rosenberg and Fazlic to reach the quarterfinals, but Green and Zalinski dropped their first match in A doubles. The teams of Scaringe and Vaughan and Berica Day and Hamilton also lost first-round doubles matches.
