Katie Cunha, Kim Guy Win Doubles Title At Illinois Invitational

Irish freshman Katie Cunha and junior Kim Guy beat Illinois’ Brooke Ferney and Michelle Webb 8-4 to the A doubles title at the Illinois Invitational on Sunday. The victory completes a run to the title than included a win over Iowa’s top-seeded and sixth-ranked team of Shera Wiegler and Toni Neykova in the semifinals. The Irish return to action when they play host to USC on Fri., Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.

In consolation singles matches on Sunday, Becky Varnum beat Lorraine Bittles of Maryland 6-1, 6-1. Lindsey Green beat Michigan’s Alison Sinclair 6-2, 4-6, (7-5). Sarah Scaringe won 6-1, 6-1 over Iowa’s Jennifer Sinclair. Kelly Zalinski, Nina Vaughan, Michelle Hamilton and Berica Day all lost their consolation matches on Sunday.
