Inside Irish ACC Championship First Round: Pittsburgh

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The 33rd-ranked University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team will look to get back on the winning track this week, taking a No. 10 seed into the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship, beginning Wednesday in Rome, Georgia.

On The Panthers

  • Pittsburgh has won just three matches all season, against West Virginia, Duquesne and Dayton. The Panthers have not won a match since March 11 (11-match streak).
  • The Irish are 4-0 in the all-time series against Pittsburgh. They defeated the Panthers 6-1 in their first conference match of the season on Jan. 29, and won twice during the 2015-16 season, including a 4-0 win in the first round of last year’s conference tournament.

Irish At The ACC Championship

Since Notre Dame joined the Atlantic Coast Conference following the 2012-13 season, the Irish have participated in three ACC Championship tournaments, advancing as far as the quarterfinals in 2014 and 2016. Last season, the 11th-seeded Irish defeated Pittsburgh and Clemson in the first two rounds before falling to Georgia Tech in the quarterfinal.

Last Time Out

Notre Dame fell in its final match of the regular season, a 6-1 decision at No. 47 Clemson. The Irish have lost five matches in a row heading into Wednesday’s first round.

Singles Standouts

All six of Notre Dame’s regular singles starters own winning records in dual matches this season. Junior Allison Miller leads the team with a 15-8 dual record, while freshman Zoe Spence is 15-9. Senior Monica Robinson owns a 14-7 record; senior Mary Closs is 12-7; sophomore Rachel Chong is 12-6 and junior Brooke Broda is 10-9.

Rankings Rundown

The Irish remained stable in the latest Oracle/ITA Division I Women’s Tennis Rankings this week, staying at No. 33. Monica Robinson is ranked No. 87 in the singles standings.
