2009 Women's NCAA Singles Draw
2009 Women's NCAA Doubles Draw
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -
Senior Kelcy Tefft and freshman Kristy Frilling will represent the Irish in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, beginning Wednesday at the Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M University.
After ending one of the most successful campaigns in program history with a 4-2 NCAA semifinal loss to California Monday, the Irish will now set their sights on individual play.
A four-time all-BIG EAST choice and an All-American a year ago, Tefft will make her third appearance in the doubles competition and second showing in the singles tournament.
The Enid, Okla., native is 29-14 overall this season and 2-1 in NCAA tournament action. She is currently ranked 29th and has won six of her last nine matches. A year ago, Tefft advanced to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship and the semifinals in the doubles tournament with partner Brook Buck. In 2007, Tefft and Buck fell in the first round.
Tefft will face Miami's Laura Vallverdu in the first round Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. (ET). Vallverdu is ranked 24th nationally and is 28-7 this season and is currently riding a 12-match win streak. The three-time all-ACC selection and two-time All-American went 4-0 in this year's NCAA tournament at the No. 2 singles position.
Frilling will make her first appearance in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships. The Sidney, Ohio native is 29-10 overall and recorded a 3-1 mark in the NCAA tournament. She is 8-2 in her last 12 matches (two matches unfinished) and has an 8-5 record against nationally-ranked opponents this season.
Frilling is set to take on Florida State's Katie Rybakova in the first round of the singles tournament at 11:00 a.m. (ET) Wednesday. Rybakova is ranked 50th and is 15-12 on the season. She has won eight of her last nine matches and went 1-1 at the NCAA tournament.
Tefft and Frilling will also join forces as the second-seeded doubles team. The Irish duo is 23-3 overall and has been consistently ranked in the top three nationally all season. They became just the third doubles team in Irish history to earn a No. 1 ranking after they opened the 2009 campaign at the top spot. Tefft and Frilling won the 2008 ITA Midwest Regional doubles crown and were runners-up at the ITA National Indoor Doubles Championship.
Tefft and Frilling will meet Georgia Tech's Irina Falconi and Amanda McDowell in the doubles first round on Thursday. Falconi and McDowell are 13-10 this season, but have not played together since March 1. When the Irish and Yellowjackets met earlier this season on March 14, Tefft and McDowell faced off at No. 1 singles, while Frilling and Falconi took the court at second singles.
