NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Former women's tennis assistant coach Elizabeth Schmidt has been named head coach at Rice, the university announced last week.

Schmidt spent the past two seasons at Notre Dame, helping the Irish compile a 50-13 record, including a program-best 28-4 mark in 2007 and an appearance in the NCAA Quarterfinals. The Irish reached the NCAA Second Round last season and TennisRecruiting.net gave Notre Dame's incoming recruiting class a No. 3 ranking.

Before her stint at Notre Dame, Schmidt was an assistant coach at Rice.

Former Irish standout Brook Buck joined the women's tennis program at Oklahoma as an assistant coach.

The Oklahoma-native teamed with Kelcy Tefft to earn All-America honors in doubles last season following an NCAA semifinals appearance, the best finish by a duo in Notre Dame women's tennis history. The duo also claimed the ITA National Indoor Doubles Championship title in November 2007.
