Notre Dame Volleyball Announces 1998 Schedule

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Notre Dame volleyball team has announced its 1998 schedule, highlighted by home matches versus perennial powers Colorado and Oral Roberts, a road match vs. 1997 NCAA semfinalist Florida and participation in tournaments at the University of Wisconsin and Michigan State. The schedule also includes matches against regional rivals Valparaiso, Illinois State and Indiana, road tests at Duke and North Carolina and home BIG EAST Conference matches vs. Syracuse and 1997 NCAA Tournament entrant Villanova.

The Irish will open with a Sept. 1 match at Valparaiso before playing host to the three-team Shamrock Invitational on Sept. 4-6, with games scheduled vs. Georgia on the 4th and Colorado on the 6th. Notre Dame then will play at the Wisconsin Invitational on Sept. 11-12 (vs. the host Badgers and Indiana) and the Michigan State Invitational on Sept. 18-19 (vs. New Hampshire, Utah and MSU).

Notre Dame's home October schedule includes BIG EAST conference matches vs. Seton Hall (10/2), Rutgers (10/4), Providence (10/23), Boston College (10/25) and Syracuse (10/31), plus a non-conference match vs. ORU (10/29).

The Irish will play road BIG EAST matches in October at Connecticut (10/9) and St. John's (10/11), in addition to non-league games at Illinois State (10/6), Fairfield (10/10), Duke (10/17), UNC (10/18) and Florida (10/21).

Notre Dame will wrap up BIG EAST play in November with home matches vs. Georgetown (11/6) and Villanova (11/8) before traveling to Pittsburgh (11/14) and West Virginia (11/15). The Irish then will face Toledo at home on Nov. 18 i nthe regular season finale.

The BIG EAST and NCAA tournament both have expanded for the 1998 season. The BIG EAST Tournament will include eight teams (up from six), with first-round games to be played at home sites on Nov. 21 or 22, with the semi-finals and final set for Pittsburgh's Fitzgerald Fieldhouse on Nov. 28-29.

The NCAA field has expanded from 56 teams to 64, with the first and second rounds to be played at host sites in successive days (ranging from Dec. 3-6). The regionals also will be held on consecutive days (from Dec. 10-13) while the NCAA semifinal and final will be played in Madison, Wis. on Dec. 17 and 19.
