Sweep Of Cleveland State Sends Irish To 2-0

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The Notre Dame volleyball team continued its impressive start to the 2016 season on Saturday afternoon, sweeping Cleveland State in the Golden Dome Invitational to move to 2-0 on the year.

Rebecca Nunge (Newburgh, Ind./Castle) led the Irish with 14 kills thanks to a .444 hitting percentage. Freshman Jemma Yeadon (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) added 10 kills and 12 digs.

FIRST SET (Notre Dame 25, Cleveland State 21)

Nunge paced the Irish in the opening set, posting six kills while hitting .429 in the opening frame. As a team, the Irish recorded 14 kills to go along with just three attack errors, while adding three aces and four blocks.

SECOND SET (Notre Dame 25, Cleveland State 22)

Nunge again paced the Irish in the second, this time with five kills on just seven attacks. Setter Caroline Holt recorded 13 assists. The Vikings hung around thanks to six kills from Grace Kauth, but after 13 ties and five lead changes, the Irish pulled away.

THIRD SET (Score)

After the close second frame, Notre Dame led most of the third. This time it was Jemma Yeadon with five kills and six digs to lead the hosts in both categories, while Holt contributed 12 assists.

GOLDEN DOME INVITATIONAL ROUND-UP

Saturday's action kicked-off with Western Michigan completing a sweep of Seton Hall, 25-23, 25-18, 25-20. Three Broncos (Oliva Kofie, Kate Carey and Sydney LeMay) recorded at least 10 kills while all hitting at least .360. Mary Murphy recorded 40 assists setting up the WMU attack. Seton Hall was paced by nine kills from Danielle Schroeder.


 

 

The Golden Dome Invitational concludes on Saturday evening, first with Seton Hall (0-2) facing Cleveland State at 4:30 p.m. on Watch ND. The tournament concludes with Notre Dame playing host to Western Michigan at 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
