South Bend, Ind. - Junior Cassidy Lichtman recorded 23 kills and nine digs to lead the fifth-ranked Stanford Cardinal over the LSU Tigers 3-2 in the opening match of the 2009 Shamrock Invitational at Notre Dame's Joyce Center.
It was a back and forth match between the Tigers and the Cardinals. LSU won the first set, 25-22, but Stanford came back to win a tightly contested second set, 27-25. The Tigers took a two set to one advantage after winning the third, 25-22. In the forth, Stanford tied the match at 2-2, winning the set by a 25-21 margin before going on to win the fifth and final set, 15-12.
The Cardinal received a key contribution from junior Alix Klineman. She led the team with 34 assists while adding 14 digs.
Leading the Tigers was sophomore Michelle Williams. She posted an impressive .387 attack percentage by converting 14 of her 31 attempts.
Stanford returns to the court at 4:00 p.m. (ET) on Saturday as they take on Denver in their second game of the Shamrock Invitational.
LSU is next in action at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday as they take on the host Notre Dame to round out the day's action.
