Welfare & Development Annual Events:

  • Student Development Event Photos

  • Freshmen Orientation is an event that extends an invitation to all parents of freshmen student-athletes, but is required of all freshmen student-athletes to attend. Freshmen Orientation includes an educational presentation for student-athletes only, about life on campus, and a panel presentation for parents, about the life of a student-athlete at Notre Dame.

  • Evening at Shamrock Hills is an event hosted by Athletic Director Dr. Kevin White. This special event is for all freshmen and senior student-athletes, managers and cheerleaders. Taken place at Dr. White's house, this social event serves as a welcoming for incoming freshmen and a send-off for graduating seniors.

  • Fellowship for Christian Athletes (FCA) is a student-athlete led group that focuses on spiritual development and peer support. The group explores various topics, i.e. dating, peer pressure, self-esteem, etc... FCA meets weekly during the academic year.
    • The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is the largest interdenominational, school-based, Christian sports organization in America. FCA focuses on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ. Since 1954, FCA has been challenging coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior high and youth levels to use the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world for Jesus Christ (www.fca.org)
    • Bi-weekly meetings (dates to come)
    • For more information about FCA at Notre Dame, please contact Harold Swanagan (hswanaga@nd.edu).
  • Buddy Walk is an annual event held in honor of children with Downs Syndrome. Several Notre Dame student-athletes volunteer for the event to walk, dance, sing and play games with the Downs Syndrome participants.

  • International Student-Athlete Social is an event held by the Student-Welfare and Development Department, and the Department of International Student Services and Activities. This event seeks to educate international student-athletes on the resources available to them at Notre Dame. It is also an evening that provides an opportunity for international student-athletes to get to know each other, faculty and staff who will play an integral part in their Notre Dame experience.

  • Professors at Practice is an annual event that gives professors and their families an opportunity to view a particular team's practice and have dinner with the student-athletes.

  • Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) consists of representatives from each sport, as well as, cheerleaders and student managers. The goal of the SAAC is to enrich the overall experience of student-athletes by: Streamlining and promoting efficient communication between Notre Dame Athletics administration and student-athletes. SAAC members are encouraged to communicate to administration ideas of how to better serve student-athlete needs, and ideas for programs for the different components of student development. The members are the driving force in getting involvement of student-athletes in campus and community projects, and improving relationships between and among teams and individual student-athletes.

  • Positive Transition Series is an annual seminar that requires attendance by all sophomore, junior, and senior student-athletes. Topics include public speaking, financial planning, life after sports, career development, dining etiquette, sports nutrition, and healthy body image.

  • Tackle the Arts is a service project developed by former student-athlete Courtney Watson (football), who sought the need to educate and motivate children from low socioeconomic areas of South Bend in reading and the arts. This two day event brings youth in the community to Notre Dame to spend time with football players reading, writing poetry, playing musical instruments, painting and singing.

  • Rosenthal Student-Athlete Leadership Institute (February 5, 2006) is a full day workshop for student-athletes who have been identified by their coaching staff and peers as having leadership qualities. The leadership program, made possible by Dick Rosenthal (former Notre Dame Student-Athlete), is geared at educating and giving student-athletes the necessary tools to allow their leadership skills to blossom.

  • Ongoing Service Projects are beneficial to our student-athletes and the surrounding communities and organizations that welcome assistance from Notre Dame student-athletes. This relationship allows student-athletes to connect with youth and adults, thus providing a platform for all who are involved for developing respect, care, and a value system indicative for building a strong and supportive community.
